Editorial Director

Reporting to: Managing Director

Job overview
The Editorial Director will be responsible for the management and growth a Publications Editorial Team comprised of high-profile accounts by providing leadership and mentoring support. The role, in partnership with the Team Leader, will be responsible for providing editorial, scientific and strategic expertise to leading international pharmaceutical Clients, as well as colleagues within the agency. The Editorial Director will play a key role in building relationships with Clients and OLs, liaising regularly on assigned accounts.

Key responsibilities

Functional
1. Manage the Editorial Team in terms of resource availability and requirements, briefing, job allocation, job progress and quality, keeping the Team Lead informed as to the progress of projects in respect of the agreed timelines and targets
2. Perform project orientated tasks according to the brief provided by the Client and as discussed with the Team Lead to the specifications and agreed deadlines
3. Liaise with Clients to obtain project briefs and timelines, or if this is not possible, to liaise with other members of the team to derive clearer project briefs. Maintain contact with Clients to keep them informed of project progress and to track project scope
4. Liaise with the Editorial Team/Account Managers to develop and implement timelines and ensure the quality and feasibility of commitments made to Clients
5. Manage medical writing team: internal and external freelance resource
6. Review all written materials and work with the Editorial Team to maintain the quality of all deliverables
7. Where appropriate to project requirements, fulfil the roles of the Medical Writer and Editor
8. Assist Account Manager in setting contract and team budgets
9. In conjunction with the Team Lead, develop existing accounts and new business opportunities to provide additional medical communications business on behalf of SYNERGY by:
• Contributing to new business pitches/account development
• Contributing to strategic scientific communications planning
• Providing strategic/scientific review of materials

Managerial
1. Line manage the Editorial Team, lead Editorial Team meetings, drive the review and appraisal process and update team structure as necessary. Support the Editorial Team in their professional development and skills training.
2. Oversee the editorial and scientific quality of content (in liaison with Team Lead) and be the editorial lead in strategic content development and strategic planning in relation to marketing and commercial initiatives
3. Keep the Team Lead informed of possible future resource shortfalls and changes to the business and/or operational environment that will need to be addressed, thus ensuring the continued efficient delivery of services to Clients
4. Liaise with approved external contractors providing briefs and ensuring that work that is returned conforms to the original brief
5. Liaise with the Team Lead to resolve resourcing problems and any conflicts with schedules that may arise. These should be identified as soon as possible and outsourcing strategy agreed before initiation
6. Coach senior writers and oversee their coaching of junior writers and trainees within the group on both writing and scientific/strategic aspects of projects, and act as a reviewer on such projects, ensuring that the writing aspects of all projects are completed on time, to the Clients’ brief and within budget
7. Manage contact with Project/Account Managers team to ensure preparation of requested documents and enable cross-functional teamwork, as required

Organisational
1. Take an active role in managing and developing Client relationships and deliver operational efficiency, financial control and business planning across the organisation
2. Manage contact with Project/Account Managers to exchange information on future jobs, workflow and budget utilisation and to provide details of job allocation
3. Provide creative and strategic input in internal meetings, working to streamline internal processes
4. Develop and maintain SYNERGY procedures manuals, processes and guidelines as appropriate
5. Take shared responsibility for maintaining SYNERGY values
6. Serve existing Clients and aid in the identification of potential new work or business opportunities
7. Take responsibility for the management of new customers; aid with the identification of their business needs and communications requirements
8. Generate new business concepts and convert concepts into leads in conjunction with the SYNERGY team
9. Ensure that SYNERGY operates adequate standard operating procedures, policies and guidelines to deliver services that adhere to all relevant regulations and requirements

Strategic
1. Use strategic insight to provide practical input to communications programmes and publications plans
2. Lead discussions relating to assigned account/projects, at both a tactical and strategic level, with Clients, thought leaders and internal colleagues
3. Identify opportunities for development and collaborate with other senior team members in writing programmes and proposals for existing Clients
4. Keep up-to-date with data, new references and developments in the disease or drug area of responsibility

Skills and Experience – essential vs. desirable

Essential:
• Must have a Biological/Life science degree as a minimum qualification – preferably a PhD in a Biological science
• A minimum of 8 years’ senior editorial experience, with a minimum of 4 years’ experience specifically gained within a medical communications agency, and 3 years’ experience working as part of a publications team
• Hands on experience in scheduling and briefing activities across a team of writers and driving the timely execution of a wide variety of publications materials
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
• Meticulous attention to detail
• Team player, agile, flexible and adaptable with the ability to build good working relationships, both inside and outside the company
• Experienced in line management and the mentoring and development of junior members of staff
• Extensive experience in the development and review of a wide variety of publications materials
• Experience in the development and maintenance of SOPs and internal processes to ensure delivery of consistent and high-quality materials
• Excellent knowledge of industry guidelines, including Good Publication Practice and ICMJE

Desirable:
• Previous experience in Oncology would be highly desirable
• Demonstrable understanding of publication planning and delivery including an understanding of the publication plan development process and experience in the development of key publication plan components
• Working knowledge of content management systems e.g. Datavision and industry compliance processes would be advantageous
